Case Study #1: Mykonos
I saw photos of this particular restaurant in Mykonos long before I got the chance to see it in the flesh. Let’s just say it was a quite a different experience.
Instagram:
Below is an example of one of the photos I had seen before visiting Mykonos. One of my travel companions was an avid photographer and often took us to the nooks and crannies of the island that he had discovered on Instagram; places that we might not otherwise have come across. This restaurant was one of these places.
Reality:
Below is the photo I took on my visit to Mykonos. This is entirely unedited and not a shot that I am particularly proud of, however it was taken on a decent camera (not just my phone’s camera for once).

This place is stunning in real life. However it does not look like the photo above, nor do I believe it is “the hidden gem of Mykonos” as I have seen it called on Instagram.
This particular area of Mykonos is called “Little Venice” which, whilst beautiful, is also absolutely crawling with guided tours, to the point where most of my time spent there was shoulder-to-shoulder with another sweaty tourist (nothing ruins the ambience of a place like having someone else’s sweat on your shoulder).
My friend who I mentioned earlier also took a photo on the same day. His photo is on the left.
As you can see, his photo was a tad more impressive than mine, and certainly fit right into the Instagram world. He was using a much better camera than I was, and has edited the photo to an expert level.
However, although his photo looks amazing, if you’re interested in what to really expect, my photo is a lot more accurate and to the best of my memory shows exactly what this restaurant looks like in real life!
